Honeybee Democracy

Princeton University Press - A remarkable and richly illustrated account of scientific discovery, for the first time, Honeybee Democracy brings together, decades of Seeley's pioneering research to tell the amazing story of house hunting and democratic debate among the honeybees. In the late spring and early summer, as a bee colony becomes overcrowded, a third of the hive stays behind and rears a new queen, while a swarm of thousands departs with the old queen to produce a daughter colony.

Princeton University Press. An impressive exploration of animal behavior, Honeybee Democracy shows that decision-making groups, whether honeybee or human, can be smarter than even the smartest individuals in them. Seeley describes how these bees evaluate potential nest sites, choose a final site, advertise their discoveries to one another, engage in open deliberation, and navigate together--as a swirling cloud of bees--to their new home.

Honeybee Democracy - . He concludes that what works well for bees can also work well for people: any decision-making group should consist of individuals with shared interests and mutual respect, debate should be relied upon, diverse solutions should be sought, a leader's influence should be minimized, and the majority should be counted on for a dependable resolution.

Seeley investigates how evolution has honed the decision-making methods of honeybees over millions of years, and he considers similarities between the ways that bee swarms and primate brains process information. Every year, faced with the life-or-death problem of choosing and traveling to a new home, vigorous debate, honeybees stake everything on a process that includes collective fact-finding, and consensus building.

In fact, as world-renowned animal behaviorist Thomas Seeley reveals, these incredible insects have much to teach us when it comes to collective wisdom and effective decision making.

The Lives of Bees: The Untold Story of the Honey Bee in the Wild

Princeton University Press - The lives of bees is thomas seeley’s captivating story of what scientists are learning about the behavior, social life, and survival strategies of honey bees living outside the beekeeper’s hive―and how wild honey bees may hold the key to reversing the alarming die-off of the planet’s managed honey bee populations.

Seeley, a world authority on honey bees, sheds light on why wild honey bees are still thriving while those living in managed colonies are in crisis. Princeton University Press. Drawing on the latest science as well as insights from his own pioneering fieldwork, he describes in extraordinary detail how honey bees live in nature and shows how this differs significantly from their lives under the management of beekeepers.

The Lives of Bees: The Untold Story of the Honey Bee in the Wild - He shows beekeepers how to use the principles of natural selection to guide their practices, and he offers a new vision of how beekeeping can better align with the natural habits of honey bees. Engagingly written and deeply personal, The Lives of Bees reveals how we can become better custodians of honey bees and make use of their resources in ways that enrich their lives as well as our own.

. Seeley presents an entirely new approach to beekeeping―Darwinian Beekeeping―which enables honey bees to use the toolkit of survival skills their species has acquired over the past thirty million years, and to evolve solutions to the new challenges they face today. How the lives of wild honey bees offer vital lessons for saving the world’s managed bee coloniesHumans have kept honey bees in hives for millennia, yet only in recent decades have biologists begun to investigate how these industrious insects live in the wild.

Care of Bees in Warré & Top Bar Hives

Independently published - Joe firmly dispels this and shows that various interactions between the beekeeper and the colony are needed in order for honey to be harvested the main goal of beekeeping and to prevent the issue of swarms which can become a nuisance to neighbours. A very, very important message in the book is that bees are able to deal with varroa if they are given the chance to do so.

For those who have frame hives, british national, Segeberger Beute, such as the Langstroth, Dadant, Frankenbeute, Flow Hive: see my book "Care of Bees in Frame Hives". The version with full colour photographs is also available from Amazon. Joe bleasdale's new book is a simple and straightforward guide, ideal for both beginners to beekeeping and those new to wanting to manage their bees for the first time using top bar hives.

Illustrated with line drawings and colour photographs. Whilst there are many types of hives in which bees can be kept just using top bars, Joe concentrates on the Warre hive, smaller than conventional hives, which allows for the construction of eight combs in each box, this being composed of a series of boxes, and the Horizontal Hive which usually has enough room for twenty combs.

Before going into any management details, and throughout the book there are listed typical management tasks which a beekeeper needs to carry out over the year, Joe gives the reader the main information which is needed as regards the natural history and development of the colony, but in each case his advice and practical instructions are geared to top bar hives.

Care of Bees in Warré & Top Bar Hives - Joe gives a realistic appraisal of the differences between Warre and Horizontal hives, including the drawbacks inherent in each system. Indeed, he has proved that his system of beekeeping has worked, having not used them for years, Joe is against the use of chemicals in bee hives and, with healthy colonies being the result.
